For the love of Formula...

Anyone familiar with Redstone and our love of techy bike bits knows that we are big fans of Formula Brakes.  After making the first Juicy 7 brakes for Avid back when they were an Englewood, CO company, Formulas design, feel, and power have continued to improve under their own moniker.

My favorite brake of all time has got to be Formula's The One.  Massively powerful, good looking, and XC light, what could be better?

We're going to find out after just installing new 2013 Formula RO brakes on our Intense Carbine demo bike and test sled.

Hall Ranch Trail Conditions 12/21

It's the end of the world so I figured I'd get one last ride at Hall Ranch.

Antelope Trail was a mixed bag of snow and dirt.

Long Time no Bloggin

It's been a while since we put up some ride stokeage, I'm sure you guys are kinda bored with no so subliminal messages about consignment bikes, right?!

How about a photo bomb session then.  Our last ride stoke post was Big Fall Ride back in Sept!  Well then, picking up where I left off...

I had to go retrieve the truck after Big Fall Ride after leaving it in the forest overnight.  Good excuse for a ride, right?

Caveat Emptor

Veloswap/Used parts PSA:

With Veloswap, ebay, craiglist, and others, there are just as many bad deals as there are good deals.  We definitely recommend that, if you're buying used, it's imperitive that A)you get the goods in your hand to look over in person and B) you or someone you know understands what you're looking at.

Case in point - A customer recently brought in a set of wheels for us to check out.  Bought them used as a smoking deal.  The wheelset was sold as used hubs in a new build.  Take a look at the 3 spokes.  One of the spokes shows several threads exposed.  The other 2 spokes have loctite or something on them to mask the fact that the threads are showing.  A good handbuilt wheelset should have all of the threads buried in the nipple.  Also, note the corrosion on the nipples.  That's something that may or may not be an issue down the road with a popped nipple head.

Big Fall Ride VII, 2012 edition

Sorry I don't have more pictures.  I was on track for lots of pics, but my camera battery crapped out and I nursed it along without taking many pics.  Here's what I ended up with!

Ian ready to start the day in Allenspark.  And what a fine day it was.

Big Fall Ride VII!

Is this really going to be year number 7 for Big Fall Ride?  Sunday 9/30.  Meeting at Redstone Cyclery at 7:30am.  We'll get Lyons peeps to shuttle everyone up to Bunce School Road, then you get to ride back to Lyons on about as much dirt as possible.  Expect LOTS of climbing and even more descending.  Here's the goods from 2010:

Hermit Park and Homestead Meadows

After the our Winter Park ride and last weekends BMA Sufferfest, I was looking for something a little easier.  Sometimes, that's tough to do in these hills, but today I was destined for Hermit Park.  Hermit Park, is a cheating way to get to Homestead Meadows, the area at the top of Lion Gulch.  Good stuff.  Good cruising and mellow riding.  Kinda sandy this time of year, but still purdy good.
There's a few singletracks with an arterial doubletrack that runs thru the entire system.  Typically, I access the meadows via Lion Gulch, which is for sure a beast to be tamed.  Being one of the most techy trails on the front range,  ...

Crosier Mountain Monday!

I was fortunate enough to escape to Crosier Mountain today.  I haven't ridden Crosier in a couple of years.  It did not dissapoint (never does)

I started at the private ex-youth hostel known as H bar G.  It's private and marked private everywhere but they are ok with bike and hike traffic as long as you follow the rules.  Keep the gate closed and be on your way to some of the best, most scenic, and toughest singletracks around.  Crosier Mountain.

3 days in Keystone Day 1

Thanks to my awesome wife, we were able to stay in Keystone for 2 nights and 3 days this past weekend!  Ride plans?  Definitely.  Day one was Saturday, which was "my day."  All day.  Yes.  Bike of choice?  My Intense Carbine.  Carbon, light, stiff, super responsive, and 6" of buttery suspension in the back.  And a great climber.  The Carbine is probably my favorite bike of all time and an excellent all arounder.  I couldn't think of a better companion on a journey of this magnitude.  Epic trails and epic adventure were calling my name.

Tues Ride Aug 14 Trailwork!

This Tuesday, August 14, will be our last Tuesday trailwork of the season.  We'll be working at the very top of Antelope Trail at Hall.  The goal is to funnify the upper section of crappy road.  Hope some of you can make it out!  We'll be riding Lyons Geto Singletrack afterwards before beers at OB.  Bring your lights!

Pssst, if you need lights, our Niterider preseason just arrived!

Breckenridge B68

B68 is in the books!  Since I'm not a racerboy anymore, I brought a camera to help preserve the experience.  The race had everything - paved road, jeep roads, amazing singletrack, tough climbs, big mountains, mud, dust, rain, hike a bikes, everything. Such a fun and hard day, done at 8hrs 7min, including taking photos.

Tuesday Ride 7/17

Jamestown, gonna be a hard one, too. Lots of hike a bike. Bring lights, we'll be out late. Fun!

Antelope Trail trailwork, Tuesday 7/10 5pm

As part of our summer Tuesday trailwork days, we'll be working on Antelope Trail at Hall Ranch this coming Tuesday 5/10.  We'll start sending people up the road from the bike shop around 5pm.  This is going to be a fun one.  We'll be working on the lowest section of road, immediately adjacent to the trailhead.  We're going to do our darndest to make the road go away and turn it into more singletrack.  Please come out to help :)

Boulder County will have tools, refreshments, etc.  All you need to do is show up.  We'll be working til dark.  If anyone wants to ride afterwords, we'll don lights and ride some Lyons Ghetto Singletrack before moving on to Oskar Blues.

It’s good to hear from you.  According to our records Redstone Cyclery has completed over 273 hours of volunteer work since 2008 and maintained over 1300’ of trail including 7 water bars and armoring 30’ of wet trail.  Considering that you are a relatively small independent retail operation versus a large corporation you should feel incredibly proud of this accomplishment.  I have created one or two Executive Partnership Summaries for a few of our partners; these summaries basically outline an organization’s contributions and includes some narrative about the bigger picture.  I would be happy to create one of these for you if you thought it would be helpful for your business.  Just let me know.  We appreciate all of our stewardship teams immensely.  Keep smiling J

Nah, just curious to see how a small business that actually cares stacks up against a mega Pharma company that does it for publicity ;)
