New Transition Covert!

Transition has recently unveiled plans for a revised Covert.
The Covert has been long standing in the Transition line as a dot it all 5.5" bike. Big changes for 2009 include bumping up the travel to 6" (150mm) and keeping the same weight.
Pricing is $1550 for the frame with RP23 rear shock.

Also, this Tues is Amy's last day at Oskar's. She'll have an upstairs table reserved for us at 8:45 or 9. I think it'd be great if we could all bring some extra for her tip jar. She's moving to MT to go to school and I think it would be a great way to send her off :)

Just when you were able to push the thought of a new Intense Tracer VP to the back of your mind... Intense just anounced another custom color on their Tracer VP. This time it's black chrome. Think of it almost like a "works" finish in black. It's only available with Intenses XT complete build package. Check it out!

pre work ride

After I dropped Z off at school, I was able to sneak in a little ride before opening the shop. I was hankering for a mellow spin - something easy and scenic. South St Vrain Hwy was just the ticket. I also wanted to ride something that felt like home - the XO was my ticket to comfy and relaxed.

I started on Old South. I ride Old South all the time. It's a good way to get to Hall Ranch for a mountain bike ride, or a good way to get out of town on 7. Old South give me that peaceful easy feelin.
Highway 7 is always good, too. I love me some SSV Canyon.
Turned around to take this shot in the narrows. It's superbly fun rolling back down thru it.
I didn't have a destination in mind really. Just a little river therapy. I hiked out towards a big ol rock in the middle of the stream to sit for a bit. The South St Vrain Creek has always put me in a better place.

Not too shabby for a 45 minute pre work ride. I definitely arrived back at the shop in a better mood. Great way to start the day.

Tuesday Ride 5/12

It has been described by some as tough jeep road climbs with hiking thrown in combined with fun, steep and technical flowy descents. It has been described by others as having climbs that make you feel like you were punched in the stomach and want to vomit combined with descents hair raisingly steep and rocky.

However you slice it, Left Hand Canyon OHV area offers up a unique experience. I mean, heck, if the views are top notch and the descending is good enough that local dh'ers push their bikes up to come down the singletrack, it's worth hitting.

Bike shop at 5:30pm and the LHC parking lot at 6ish. We'll be at the lower pullout on the lefthand (south) side of the road just below the main jeep road entrance.

Changes to the Tracer VP

I've been on an Intense Tracer VP for several months now and I'm loving it. It's taken me a bit fiddling with set up, but I definitely have it dialed in to my liking now. The Tracer has a flush mount headset and a 140mm Fox RLC in the front. It's stiff enough (with the DT Swiss 9mm Thru Ratchet) for me and suits my ex racer dude riding style well. I played around with 5.5 and 6" in the rear and have decided on the 5.5. Seems to climb a little snappier and doesn't wallow in the travel like it did on 6". In defense of the 6" setting, though, I haven't ridden the bike with a bigger fork, so that could change in the future.

I haven't changed anything since I built the bike, but I've recently started making some rearl changes to the bike. First off, it's got a name now.

Local fast guy and Ergon rep, Jeff Kerkhove, sent me a set of grips to try out. He thought they would work well in this market. I guess that means where we ride all day in steep and technical terrain and like to have a full grip around the bar. The "all mountain" Ergon GA1 seems to be the ticket. It's got a nicely shaped palm area with good grip and a comfy compound.

Today was my first day out on them and so far the report is good. I will keep you posted with long term wear and comfort.

The next thing I did was upgrade the wheels. I've had the same set of DT Swiss 240/Mavic 717 rims for over 8 years. It's surely a testament to a strong wheelset but, by the time I retired them, the rear rim had about 9 spots in which I had to pull dings out with a crescent wrench. Just sayin. I've been recently building a lot of wheels for 29 and 26 inch bikes with Stan's Rims. I've heard great things so far, but I like to personally use things that I sell in the shop so I thought I'd give them a try. I'm not normally a fan of non eyeletted spoke holes, but I built these up with aluminum nipples anyway, just to see how they'll hold up.

With Stan's yellow tape, valves stems, and sealant, I was all good to go. The non tubeless Maxxis 2.35 High Rollers set up with minimal fuss. Today, traction was perfect and air loss was non noticeable. I'll report back on these after a few rides, too.

The final change was a new seatpost. I finally gave in to using a crutch :), especially if it meant adding weight and complexity to my ride. Well, the Gravity Dropper added both, but it also added a great dynamic to the ride.

This one is the standard Gravity Dropper with remote. It's got a 1" drop and a 4" drop. I'm definitely glad to have picked up the multi position post. If found myself using the 1" drop all of the time. It's super easy to use and allows you to get your center of weight down and between the tires easier. Without a doubt, one of the best upgrades I've done in a while.

After all the changes, the bike now is at 28.9 lbs with Shimano M540 pedals. Not too bad for a 5.5" travel ride.

Spring

What's up, Redstoners? Looks like you guys have had your fill of tough Colorado spring. I thought I'd post some pictures up here from the East.

One of the cool things about east coast singletrack on private land is that you can ride through the entire, wet spring. I can't believe how green it's gotten around here already.

No Tuesday ride for me this week. Live music is on deck at the gradeschool, and my oldest daughter will be rockin out with her fellow kindergarteners. Tuesday ride is still on, though, just not for me :)
